Cloud migration took Caverion to a modern IT environment – and brought immediate cost-savings

Caverion is specialized in making built environments smart and sustainable. To succeed in this mission, it needed to take a look at its own IT environment. Enfo helped Caverion in a major transformation from data center to Azure cloud.
Caverion’s Cloud Program stemmed from the need for an IT environment that would support the company’s business and development. Before the transformation, most of Caverion’s systems and applications were running in a data center.
“Lots of them were legacy applications and running out of support. We also had challenges with many systems. So, something had to be done and we needed to become more efficient”, explains Christian Sternberg Manager of Technology Architecture at Caverion.
The main goal for Caverion was to get rid of the old IT infrastructure and build a new, modern one in the cloud. From the business point of view, Caverion wanted a scalable platform that would enable changes in much faster pace than before. This was also an important step for Caverion’s IT organization, as it would give them a better basis for running the applications and building new ones.
Enfo “best of breed” for cloud migration
Once the cloud strategy was finished and Caverion was ready to plan the transformation, they started to look for partners. The aim was to find the “best of breed” for different areas, instead of one big partner. Enfo was selected for cloud migration, and also for managed services in this area.

We had a lot of skilled candidates, but Enfo stood out as the most flexible one. We had a good match from the organization’s point of view, as well as from the people’s perspective. Enfo had very skilled experts in this area.

“We brought our experts in since the very beginning and were able to answer all of Caverion’s questions. There was also a good cultural match: we were very similar, and the atmosphere was relaxed throughout the process”, says Max Käär, who acted as a Program Manager for the project at Enfo.
Thorough discovery and planning – basis for smooth execution
The scope of the project included around 400 servers and 250 databases. It was not just a simple lift-and-shift migration, though: the IT environment was complicated and full of dependencies.
Enfo and Caverion did a thorough discovery of these dependencies in order to define the most suitable solutions. The aim was to carry out the transition without any negative side effects to the end users.
“One of Enfo’s key competencies was their capacity to understand our situation and needs. We worked very well together in the beginning to get a good grip of our applications. Based on this understanding, Enfo built a solid plan and then put it to practice”, Sternberg says.
With a good plan, the execution was easy and the cooperation went smoothly. “Of course, there were some setbacks. But we worked well together to overcome them.”
Easy-to-manage IT environment and immediate cost-savings
As a result, Caverion now has an IT environment that is much easier to manage in the future. The transformation also brought some quick wins, for example by making use of new technology offered by public cloud services. These benefits were gained with relatively little effort.
Also, the project provided Caverion the opportunity to check their systems and applications and do possible clean-ups.
“We identified a lot of old infrastructure and applications that were no longer in use. Taking them down brought us immediate cost-savings”, Sternberg rejoices.
In time and within the budget
Caverion and Enfo have now finished the project successfully – in time and within the budget.
“The migration did not cause any critical fault situations during the entire project, which is also a sign of a success”, Käär points out.
The project required a great deal of cooperation between Caverion, Enfo and Caverion’s other partners. Enfo provided strong expertise in cloud and migrations, while Caverion provided information about business requirements and dependencies between the applications, and testing capabilities. Caverion’s other partners provided their expertise about the applications and their technologies.
Caverion now counts with Enfo as their partner for future cloud services.
“I see Enfo as a trustworthy partner that delivers what is expected in all areas of cooperation. We are very satisfied with their solutions to our problems. On a personal level, the working relationship with Enfo’s experts has been very good and they have teamed up well with our own employees. This has made the cooperation smooth and easy”, Sternberg concludes.
